Advice from Amy Olden – Make-up Artist and Hairstylist

Amy Olden is one of the leading Stylist and Make-up artists in Bloemfontein and the Free State. She prides herself in keeping up with the latest trends and technique to give each bride the best possible service.

I asked her a few quick questions to get you on the right track.

With big Television shows like Top Billing behind you why did you decide to specialize in weddings?
I love working on TV sets but I prefer being part of someone’s special day

What advice would you give a bride when choosing a look for her wedding day?
When looking through Pinterest make sure the model in the photo has similar coloring as you, same colour hair and skin tone this will help you get a more realistic idea of what will suit you

Do you have any tips for brides who plan on having loads of bridesmaids?
Make sure to book out a big enough getting ready room otherwise it can get very cramped, also if you have very loud and opinionated bridesmaids you may prefer to have a room to your self when you are getting your hair and makeup done so that you can take a moment to take it all in and relax.

Would you say doing a trail is important?
A Trial is extremely important for both the bride and makeup artist to help the bride decide what look she wants or if the look she thought she wanted will work for the makeup artist the trial helps us to understand exactly what she wants and is a trial run for the big day.

How do you determine the wedding schedule to make sure you don’t run late on the wedding day?
I always start by asking the bride what time she needs to be done by and then book her in an hour 30 mins before that time and all bridesmaids before bride. This ensures for the day to run smoothly.

Are there any question you feel each bride should ask a make-up artist/ hairstylist before making a booking for their wedding day?
Yes, I would say do your research have a look at her website and Facebook page read her reviews and even contact a few of her previous clients this will help to make your final decision.

What should the bride do from her side before the wedding day to ensure perfect hair and make-up?
For makeup if the bride can exfoliate and mask the night before this helps with having a smooth base for the makeup to go. For the hair wash hair the night or day before and use very minimal conditioner as you don’t want the hair to be too soft.

How far in advance should a bride be booking her hair stylist as well as make-up artist?
As soon as you have know your wedding date and venue booking your photographer and makeup artist should be the next things to book as they book up very quickly.
